Colossus of Constantine depicts one of the most iconic survivals of ancient Rome: the monumental marble fragments of Emperor Constantine’s seated statue, created in the early 4th century. Now housed in the courtyard of the Capitoline Museums, these oversized hands, feet, and head speak to the grandeur and political theater of imperial sculpture. Bertram’s watercolor isolates one of these heroic remnants, capturing its scale, gravitas, and time-worn surface with exceptional sensitivity.
