During his time in Paris from 1886 to 1888, Van Gogh created over twenty self-portraits. This particular portrait demonstrates the artist's familiarity with Neo-Impressionist techniques and color theory. Interestingly, it is one of several works painted on the reverse side of an earlier study featuring peasants.
