- Omani Somt Fine Silver Pectoral Necklace circa 1900-1950
- Approx. 32" long
- Diameter of Centerpiece : 4"
- Material: Silver #92.5 Sterling Silver with authentic Maria Theresa Thalers.
- From the Collection of Lois Sherr Dubin and illustrated on page 98 in Lois's magnificent book The History of Beads: From 30,000 B.C. to the Present (Abrams, 1987; reissued in paperback in 2004 and updated in 2009 as The History of Beads: From 100,000 to the Present), a beloved classic study and reference on the subject that has been published in five languages.
- Omani Tribal Silver was still possible to find in the markets of Muscat, Nizwa, Ibri, Sur or Salalah or from still working silversmiths more remote mountain villages through the 1960's-70's. Sadly, that is no longer possible. True, authentic pieces are found only in private collections and/or museums throughout the world.
- Omani silver is prized amongst Tribal Jewelry Collectors for several reasons. Firstly, it is relatively rare. Oman has never had a large population and until the 1980's the country was virtually closed off to foreign influence, trade and tourism.
- Secondly, the older pieces were made from very high quality silver obtained not in Oman (trace amounts available there only) but from the melting down of Maria Theresa Dollars, commonly referred to as Thalers. Maria Theresa Thalers have been struck in Austria since the reign of Empress Maria Theresa of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The Empress died in 1780 and since that time, all Thalers that were subsequently struck were minted with that date regardless of the actual year that they were produced. The coins achieved such a level of trust for their silver content (which is 83.3% silver) in the Middle East that neither the design not the date was varied. For more than 200 years the coins were used as an international currency among the Tribes and the States of the Middle East-especially Oman, in much the same was as the Spanish dollar was used as an international currency at the time elsewhere. The Thalers were used to complete most important transactions locally and were also given as dowries. They were also an important source of silver and were melted locally for jewelry.
- Thirdly, Omani silversmiths, located in towns and hence not part of the Nomadic Tribal Culture they served were known for their high level of workmanship.
- Finally, because all Omani silver jewelry tended to be symbolic of the unity and special bonds within a family unit, it was rare that pieces were ever sold or passed down. When no longer used or the owner passed away, they would be melted down and re-fashioned in to new jewelry.
- 'Somt' is the widely used name for an Omani necklace which has a medallion as its centerpiece. The intricacy of the work on these medallions is said to be amongst the finest you will see on any piece of Bedouin Jewelry. The basic design is always the same and consists of a six petal flower and an awe inspiring pattern of concentric circles radiating outward.
- This Omani necklace, which would have represented a large portion of a bride's dowry comprises a round silver sunburst disk decorated with niello work, eight silver Maria Theresa thaler coins dated 1780 and twenty seven silver double barrel-shaped beads. Two acacia thorns inset into their own worked silver holders add to the interest and rarity of this necklace. Importantly, all elements have wear and patina demonstrating their age and the silver has the wonderful buttery feel of high grade old silver.
- The engraved medallions possibly represent "The Rayed Sun" frequently referred to in the Holy Koran.
- The Marriyah necklace (as it is referred to) would originally have been made for the owner to wear for her marriage ceremony and thereafter on special occasions.
- Provenance: from the Collection of Lois Sherr Dubin.
- Lois Sherr Dubin wrote The History of Beads: From 30,000 B.C. to the Present (Abrams, 1987; reissued in paperback in 2004 and updated in 2009 as The History of Beads: From 100,000 to the Present), a beloved classic study and reference on the subject that has been published in five languages. Scholar, Researcher and Collector, Lois Sherr Dubin is also the world renowned author of several authoritative books on Native American jewelry and beadwork, and co-curator of numerous museum exhibitions including Totems to Turquoise: Native North American Jewelry Arts of the Northwest and Southwest; Glittering World: Navajo Jewelry of the Yazzie Family and Floral Journey: Native North American Beadwork.
- On a personal note, Ms. Dubin's magnificent book The History of Beads: From 30,000 B.C. to the Present was one of the most important inspirations in the early days of Beads of Paradise NYC. When we first opened in the East Village 3 decades ago, Ms. Dubin's book was always on our sales counter as the authoritative guide to understanding the vast array and complexities of Cultural Beads and Adornments. To many bead lovers and admirers, this was our "Bible", and Ms. Dubin's Bead Timeline Map was hung prominently in the shop. Customers would line up in front of the Timeline, trace the origins of beads they were buying, beads they would like to order, or just plain beads they were dreaming of having someday.
- To this day, whenever a customer asks for a reference guide, or just a book dealing with beads, Ms. Dubin's book is still the top of our recommendations.

Doctor Aphra and Luke Skywalker - An Entertaining Duo!
Format: Paperback
I've greatly enjoyed the various Marvel Star Wars series, but Star Wars: Yoda's Secret War left me a little unsatisfied. I'm very happy to say that the next installment--Screaming Citadel--righted the course and returned the series to its high standard.
Of course, this volume is not just comprised of the Star Wars series. It also has issues from Doctor Aphra. Obviously, the two comics crossed over with each other to deliver this story as whole.
Doctor Aphra has an ancient crystal supposedly housing the sentience of a powerful Jedi. She needs the Queen of the Screaming Citadel to access it for her, and she needs Luke Skywalker to entice the queen into doing so. You'll have to read the book for the details on using Luke as bait. Doctor Aphra sells it to Luke as a chance for him to encounter an actual Jedi master, and it's a chance for her to witness a remnant of the ancient past because she is an archaeologist after all, albeit a bit of an immoral one.
That's a pretty good premise to achieve what this story is really all about--watching Luke and Aphra interact. I believe Doctor Aphra is one of the greatest additions to the Star Wars universe in decades. She first appeared in the Darth Vader series, and she won over the audience so thoroughly that she quickly earned her own title. Honestly, though Aphra works best when pitted against the pure of heart, or at least those on the side of the Rebels. She's Aphra, so of course she manipulates Luke, double-crosses him, saves his skin a few times, then cheats him again. That's just who she is.
It's also interesting to see a rebellious streak in Luke as he jaunts off with Aphra without telling Han, Leia, or anyone else for that matter. We know his dad didn't always follow protocol, so these little deviations are always revealing when Luke is concerned. It's also fun to see him beginning to realize his power. This particular story takes place soon after A New Hope, so Luke has not yet begun to completely understand what he has at his disposal--though this book does depict Luke having some pretty cool moments with his burgeoning abilities.
We also have quite a bit of Han, Leia, and another invaluable addition to the mythology named Sana Starros. All three get their moment to shine as Han finds more and more of the hero within, Leia further establishes herself as the capable leader she is, and Sana Starros slowly reveals more and more of her past to the reader. Guess what? Not only does she have deep connections to Han Solo, but it's heavily hinted that she is also tied to Doctor Aphra as well. The specifics may surprise you.
And, as always, Aphra's versions of C3PO and R2D2 steal the show. They are named 0-0-0 and BT-1. They are basically the murderous, demented, evil version of our favorite droids, and they are forever a delight.
The story of Screaming Citadel itself is entertaining. The art is very pleasing to the eye and keeps the plot moving at a quick pace. At times the faces of the characters based off of real life actors look almost photo realistic, which is sometimes jarring when the rest of the panel does not look so true to life. Of course, the best quality of the book is simply seeing all of these characters play off of each other. It's refreshing to have such rounded, charismatic new characters as Aphra, Sana, Triple-Zero, and Bee-Tee 1 making waves with our legendary favorites.
